Religions incapable of laughing at themselves are dangerous.
Humor is the canary in the coal mine of free speech. Sadly, it is equally under attack even for those of us who give cults a wide berth. I remember well the days of the free speech movement. Who would have thought that the left would come around to complaining that there is not enough censorship? Now we’ve come to the age of safe spaces, trigger warnings, cancel culture and illiberal “wokeness” absolutism that self-righteously decrees what may be laughed about and what may not.
So going down the rabbit hole and studying the microcosm of cults is not a mere time suck. It can hold valuable lessons for everyday life after all.
