Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam’s $4.8 Billion Defamation Lawsuit Dismissed

As we reported in December 2023, Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam sued the Anti-Defamation League, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and their officers for defamation. The NOI’s Second Amended Complaint, which is posted below, details the many adverse acts the defendants are alleged to have perpetrated against the NOI and Minister Farrakhan.

Farrakhan and the NOI sought $4.8 billion in damages for the injuries they suffered at the hands of the defendants.

The complaints open by stating the legal corporate name of the Nation of Islam (emphasis ours). We note that the Nation is a not-for-profit corporation:

The The Nation of Islam, for corporate and legal purposes, is registered as Muhammad’s Holy Temple of Islam, Inc., under the not-for-profit corporation laws of the State of Illinois. It has no stock and has no parent corporation.

At the center of the complaint was Farrakhan’s allegation that he and the Nation had been economically and reputationally harmed by decades of being called anti-Semites by the
defendants:

The Nation of Islam wrote of its members that being called antisemitic “created a chilling effect on their religious practices”:

Because the NOI incorporates and practices anti-Semitism as part of its religious activities, Farrakhan’s argument is absurd: The Minister has publicly attacked the Jews since his ascension to power in the 1960’s. Indeed, Farrakhan notoriously called Jews “termites” which carried the implication that the Jews needed to be exterminated.

Plaintiffs Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam argue that their injuries for being defamed as antisemites total $4.8 billion. Plaintiffs Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam also ask the court to declare the word “antisemite” to be defamation per se and therefore expose their misuse of the court system in an attempt to silence their critics by seeking an unconstitutional form  censorship.

The Anti-Defamation League and the Simon Wiesenthal Center have been at war for decades and there is heated speech and fierce invective on both sides. This is an intractable battle based in Free Speech. Neither side will ever yield or give any ground.

The record is clear on what Farrakhan and the Nation have written and spoken for decades when it comes to Jews. Farrakhan has many times used the term “Satanic Jews.” The Minister has spoken of the Jewish control of Hollywood and how the music and sports industries ruthlessly exploit young Black talent. Farrakhan recently claimed that P. Diddy’s legal problems began only after it was discovered that P. Diddy had spoken with Farrakhan. This is all in the public record and easily found online.

Scientologist Tom Cruise works with Steven Spielberg and may other prominent Jews in Hollywood. Even as he does this, Cruise remains silent on his fellow Scientologists in the Nation of Islam engaging in decades of antisemitism. Cruise must remain silent as he serves two masters: Hollywood and David Miscavige.

As Chairman of the Board Religious Technology Center, David Miscavige could, with the stroke of a pen, revoke the license he extended to the Nation of Islam to use the copyrighted works of Dianetics and Scientology. However, David Miscavige also remains silent on the NOI’s antisemitism.

The defendants Anti-Defamation League and the Simon Wiesenthal Center were able to get the Nation of Islam’s $4.8 billion defamation lawsuit dismissed.

The NOI appealed and oral arguments were held in early October 2024. A decision from the Second Circuit Court is pending.

It is to Minister Farrakhan’s credit that he is so transparent with his membership in this court case; such transparency has never happened, and will never happen, in the Church of Scientology.
