This is Part 1 in our series which seeks to answer the question: How did Scientology get its 1993 tax exemption?

We make the case that the answer is far more complex than has been appreciated by critics.

We begin by rejecting the view that the IRS caved in to Scientology’s Fair Game. We reject this view by citing the fact that the US DoJ, FBI, and the IRS destroyed the five Mafia families in the US in the 1980’s.

These five crime families were far wealthier than Scientology. The families were also extraordinarily violent and murderous; and yet the IRS was part of the law enforcement effort to take down the Mafia.

Scientology intimidating the IRS is not the answer. IRS bureaucratic inertia and targeted disinformation campaigns by Scientology-financed front groups offer far simpler and more direct answers. And then there is the unrecognized end game strategy by both the IRS and Scientology.
