Due to his systematic approach and highly effective letters and emails to political leaders, Former Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott Diane Abbott MP called for a fraud investigation into Scientology’s UK operations.

Former Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott has written to the United Kingdom’s tax office (HMRC) calling for an investigation into the Church of Scientology and their finances, claiming “Scientology has a history of fraudulent activity internationally”.

Responding to a letter from Scientology Business Editor Alexander Barnes-Ross, the Member of Parliament for Hackney North and Stoke Newington said she had written to HMRC urging them to “look again at options” to appeal a January 2023 tax ruling in which UK Scientology chapels were designated places of public worship and subsequently exempt from paying Business Rates.

Ms. Abbott went further, asking HMRC to “more broadly investigate the Church’s finances for fraudulent activity” and cited concerns about Fair Game, stating “other former Scientologists have also attested to the horrific treatment of former members” and commending those who have spoken out publicly….

Alexander Barnes-Ross also exposed the fact that East Grinstead Town Mayor Frazer Visser had accepted a donation of £50,000 from the International Association of Scientologists (IAS).
This Scientology largesse has raised serious questions about Scientology’s possible undue influence over local affairs in exchange for donations.
